Can Anxiety Qualify for Disability in California?

Potentially. Anxiety may support a California disability claim when symptoms prevent you from doing your regular work and you meet EDD’s other requirements. A diagnosis alone does not guarantee benefits; EDD reviews how your symptoms affect your ability to work and decides each claim.

How Can Anxiety Affect Your Ability to Work?

Anxiety looks different for everyone. At work, it often shows up as a mix of mental, emotional, and physical symptoms.

    • Panic symptoms and racing thoughts
    • Avoidance of meetings, tasks, or people
    • Concentration problems and forgetfulness
    • Irritability and reactivity
    • Insomnia and early-morning waking
    • Physical symptoms like chest tightness or nausea
    • Dread before shifts or the workday
    • Impaired performance and mistakes that feel out of character

Does Anxiety Automatically Qualify as a Disability?

Many people live and work with anxiety. Others reach a point where symptoms significantly limit what they can do at work.

Work Leave Care evaluates the specific clinical picture rather than making assumptions from a label.

    What we evaluate

A licensed clinician looks at the whole picture, including:

    • Symptom severity
    • Duration and history
    • Triggers and patterns
    • Work demands and role requirements
    • How symptoms limit everyday and work activities
    • Treatment history and response
    • Safety concerns
    • Whether ongoing care is clinically appropriate
