Make sure you may qualify.
- ☐ A physical or mental health condition prevents you from doing your regular work.
- ☐ You will lose wages for at least eight days.
- ☐ You were working or actively looking for work when your disability began.
- ☐ California SDI taxes were taken from your paycheck. Look for CASDI on your paystub.
- ☐ A licensed health professional is treating you and can certify your disability.
Write down your important dates.
Before applying, identify:
- Last day worked: The last day you performed your normal job duties.
- Disability start date: The first day your condition prevented you from doing your regular work.
These dates may be different. Enter truthful and accurate dates.
Apply at the correct time.
The California EDD recommends applying:
Applying late may cause you to lose benefits.
Gather your information.
Have these items ready:
- ☐ Social Security number.
- ☐ California identification or driver’s license.
- ☐ Employer’s name, address, and telephone number.
- ☐ Most recent paystub or W-2.
- ☐ Last day worked.
- ☐ Disability start date.
- ☐ Information about any work, wages, sick pay, or other payments received after your disability began.
Create your EDD account.
- Go to the official California EDD website.
- Create or log in to your myEDD account.
- Select SDI Online.
- Complete identity verification if requested.
- Select Apply for Benefits.
- Select Apply for Disability.
Complete your part of the application.
Complete Part A — Claimant’s Statement. Answer every question truthfully, including questions about:
- • Your employer.
- • Your last day worked.
- • When you want your claim to begin.
- • Any work performed after that date.
- • Any wages, sick pay, or other payments received.
Choose how you want to receive payments: direct deposit, debit card, or mailed check. Review your answers and submit the application.
Save your receipt number.
After submitting Part A, EDD will give you a receipt number beginning with R.
This number connects your application to your health professional’s certification.
Immediately:
- • Take a screenshot of the confirmation page.
- • Save the receipt number.
- • Send it to your licensed health professional through a secure portal.
Do not submit another application just because your claim is not immediately visible.
Have your health professional complete Part B.
Your health professional must submit Part B — Medical Certification.
EDD will not process your claim until it receives both:
- • Your Part A.
- • Your health professional’s Part B.
Provide your health professional with your receipt number as soon as possible. The medical certification must also be submitted within the required claim period.
Check your California SDI claim status.
Log in to:
myEDD → SDI Online → Claim Status
Also check:
- ☐ Your SDI Online inbox.
- ☐ Your email.
- ☐ Your physical mail.
Respond quickly if EDD requests identification, wage information, medical information, or another form. After EDD receives the medical certification, processing generally takes approximately 14 days, although some claims take longer.
Know what happens after you apply.
The first seven days of a new DI claim are normally an unpaid waiting period. The eighth day is generally the first potentially payable day.
While receiving benefits:
- • Complete every form EDD sends you.
- • Report all work and wages.
- • Report when you recover or return to work.
- • Continue receiving appropriate treatment.
- • Ask your health professional for an extension before your certified recovery date if you are still unable to work.
EDD may send forms such as:
- • DE 2500A
- • DE 2593
- • DE 2525XX
Missing a deadline may stop or delay your benefits.
