Can You Get California Disability for Mental Health?
California State Disability Insurance (SDI) can apply to anxiety, depression, or another mental health condition that prevents you from doing your regular or customary work, not only to physical conditions. Eligibility still depends on EDD’s general requirements, including at least eight days of inability to do your regular work, wage loss, working or looking for work when the disability began, at least $300 in SDI-covered base-period wages, and certification by a licensed practitioner. EDD, not a clinician, determines eligibility and payment.
Can Anxiety or Depression Qualify for California Disability?
EDD describes Disability Insurance as short-term wage replacement for eligible workers who cannot do their regular or customary work because of a physical or mental illness or injury. Mental health conditions are therefore within the program’s scope.
Coverage in the abstract is different from approval of your claim. EDD evaluates the specific facts you and your practitioner provide.
Who May Qualify for California SDI for Mental Health?
EDD lists general Disability Insurance eligibility requirements. Each claim is reviewed individually.
- Unable to do your regular or customary work for at least eight days
- Loss of wages because of the disability
- Employed or actively looking for work when the disability began
- At least $300 in wages subject to SDI deductions during the base period
- Certification of your condition by a licensed physician or practitioner
How Much Does California Disability Pay in 2026?
For 2026, EDD describes benefits as generally about 70 to 90 percent of prior wages, with weekly payments from $50 up to $1,765, for up to 52 weeks. Your percentage and amount depend on your base-period earnings, and EDD performs the calculation.
We do not calculate, estimate, or promise a payment amount for you. EDD publishes how the calculation works and issues the determination.
What Does the EDD Medical Certification Include?
A licensed practitioner completes the medical certification portion of a Disability Insurance claim based on an actual evaluation and treatment relationship. For mental health claims, that generally means documenting symptoms, severity, and how they limit the ability to perform your regular work, along with the treatment plan and expected course.
A certification is a clinical statement, not an approval. It gives EDD the clinical information it needs to make its own decision. EDD also states that you must be a patient of a physician or practitioner within the first eight days of your disability and must remain under care and treatment to continue receiving benefits.
Does a Mental Health Diagnosis Automatically Qualify?
Two people can share a diagnosis and have very different functioning. What matters for a disability claim is impairment: what you can and cannot do, and for how long.
This is why a real evaluation matters more than a label, and why documentation without an evaluation is neither ethical nor useful.
- Concentration, memory, and task completion
- Attendance and starting the workday
- Sleep and recovery
- Panic or acute symptoms tied to work demands
- Emotional regulation and interaction with others
- Safety and clinical stability
Does SDI come with job protection?
No. EDD states that Disability Insurance provides wage replacement and does not protect your job. Job protection, when available, comes from FMLA, CFRA, or other applicable law and depends on separate eligibility rules.
