Can I Take Stress Leave From Work in California?
Potentially. You may be able to take time off work when stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, or another mental health condition prevents you from doing your regular job. California State Disability Insurance (SDI) may replace part of eligible workers’ wages, while job-protected leave is a separate question. EDD decides SDI eligibility and benefits.
What Does “Stress Leave” Mean in California?
People often say "stress leave" when they are really describing anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, panic, sleep disruption, or emotional overwhelm that is affecting their ability to work.
Work Leave Care does not treat "stress" as a label. The treating psychologist evaluates specific symptoms and the way those symptoms affect work functioning.
When Can Stress Make It Hard to Work?
Symptoms may rise to a clinical concern when they affect the parts of the job you rely on most.
- Concentration and focus during tasks
- Attendance and being able to start the workday
- Sleep and the ability to recover overnight
- Panic symptoms before, during, or after work
- Emotional regulation and irritability
- Decision-making and follow-through
- Motivation and completing job duties
